Just Get Rid of It!

I am a bit of a clutter-bug… But I try, and am really trying now (I know I keep talking about nesting). But Sarah (who I believe is not “nesting) has been trying to reduce also…
Today I found this article by Martha Stewart… 100 Reasons to Get Rid of It

Top 10 Points in the Article I love…
#35 – Goodwill.org — Fund job training programs and social services. Any place that has a drive through and unloads stuff I don’t want out of my car and gives me a receipt (tax deduction) is a bonus! I could waste my time with a garage sale, or I could just drive through!

#49 – Recycline.com — Yogurt containers become colorful plates, flatware, toothbrushes, and razors. plus you can send your Preserve brand toothbrushes, razors, and tongue cleaners in to have them recycled… LOVE THAT! Now I just have to find where I can buy this Preserve brand…

#50 – Getting rid of clutter will reduce housework by 40 percent. If this is true! I’m ready to re-clean the areas I’ve already gone through!

#54 – Return six MAC Cosmetics containers to any MAC store and receive a free lipstick. I’ve got 5.. just need to get through my eyeliner and I’ll be cashing in! It’s strange how at the MAC store though they have never mentioned this… but the MAC counter in Macy’s tells me every time!

#57 – Craigslist.org – Sell it to your neighbors. I LOVE this! I just sold some old CDs this weekend. $15 dollars for about 12 CDs that we had in the donate/sell pile… nothing mainstream… mostly from my Garth Brooks and John Mellencamp days! (that’s kind of embarassing)

#65 – Running shoes should be retired after 300 to 500 miles in order to prevent injuries. Have you ever gotten shin splints from old shoes? I ran 10 miles in Chicago last summer on an asphalt surface after only training on a treadmill… big mistake! I needed new shoes! We survived, but that last mile wasn’t fun.

#81 – Opt out of mailing and telemarketing lists by logging on to dmaconsumers.org. The first link at this website took me to Greendimes.org The first time I have ever heard of this website… but so cool… for $4/month, they will plant a tree each month for you, AND… this is the best part. Get your name off junk mail lists! Stop cluttering my kitchen island with junk mail! wow! And you can give it as a gift! I can’t wait to sign up! So I realize it’s $50/year, BUT I hate junk mail! Because A) it’s a huge problem for the environment. and B) it’s a huge proponent of identity theft!

#82 – Search for phone numbers online instead of storing bulky Yellow and White Pages volumes. I have always done the online lookup… at least since we got high-speed internet (5 years ago), so I’m not quite sure why it took me until about 2 months ago to recycle 7 different phone books… None of them were old… for some reason we get that many different phone books? How retarded is that!?

#94 – “The joy of giving is indeed a pleasure, especially when you get rid of something you don’t want.” -Frank Butler and Frank Cavett, “Going My Way” –So true! Last week I gave 33 VHS movies to Courage Center in Golden Valley, and they were so appreciative for something we haven’t used in probably 2 years, and were just taking up space!

#100 – And what’s the worst that can happen if you throw it out? This is what I have to keep thinking as I tackle the closet in the amusement room… really what will happen if I throw out the scraps of paper (expensive paper) leftover from my wedding invitations. And those little pigs that are still in a box since we moved in July 2005…
