My reading pace slowed in February, but this book got me reading again. I really enjoyed it.

WonderWonder by R.J. Palacio

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wonder is a great book. The story of Auggie, a 5th grade boy who was born with birth defects affecting his face. A face that multiple plastic surgeries cannot correct.

It’s the story of navigating friendships as he starts middle school and how he wins over friends. I really enjoyed how different parts of the book were told through the different perspectives of Auggie, his sister and their friends.

Very well written and a quick read!

Okay For Now

I realize I’m not posting much more than what I’ve been reading.  But with as hectic as life seems to be my outlet is reading right now.  So I hope if nothing else, maybe you’ll find something good to read in my blog until I find more to write about…

A companion book to The Wednesday Wars, and I think I enjoyed it just as much… if not more. The story of 8th grade Doug who has a lot going against him but is navigating himself through life in a new town. Making friends despite his brother’s reputation and his dad’s choices. It’s got a little love story, historical references, humor, some sad moments, that leaves you feeling good.

This is a great book. I don’t often read Young Adult literature, but this was one that could become a classic. A story of a 7th grade boy in 1967, who starts off thinking his teacher has it “in” for him and assigns him Shakespeare to read. His dad is a local competitive businessman who worries about his reputation and wants his son to take over the family business. His sister wants to be a flower child and to find herself. And the whole nation is tuned in to what is happening in Vietnam and the civil rights movement.

The story is very well-written and I will recommend to many including my 12 year old nephew.
